Your Practical Guide to the Gironde

Everything you need to navigate daily life in the department — from buses to tide schedules.

Transport Networks

The Gironde is served by an extensive public transport network connecting Bordeaux to every corner of the department and beyond.

Transgironde — The departmental coach network links Bordeaux to the coast (Arcachon, Lacanau), the Médoc, Saint-Émilion, and smaller towns across the interior. Regular services with bike racks available on most routes.

TBM (Transports Bordeaux Métropole) — Bordeaux's urban network includes 4 tram lines, bus routes, a river shuttle (BatCub), and V3 bike-sharing. The tramway is one of the most elegant in Europe, running on ground-level power through the historic centre.

SNCF / TER Nouvelle-Aquitaine — Regional trains connect Bordeaux Saint-Jean station to Arcachon (50 min), Libourne/Saint-Émilion (35 min), and Langon (45 min). The Paris–Bordeaux TGV takes just 2 hours.

Bordeaux Airport (BOD) — Mérignac airport serves domestic and European destinations. The Liane 1+ express bus connects the airport to Bordeaux city centre in 30 minutes.

Weather & Tide Tables

The Gironde enjoys an oceanic climate moderated by the Gulf Stream. Summers are warm and dry (averaging 26 °C in July), while winters are mild and wet.

Atlantic Tide Tables — Crucial for visiting the Arcachon Bay coastline, oyster farms, and the Banc d'Arguin. The Gironde estuary and coastline experience significant tidal ranges (up to 5 metres at spring tides). Always check local tide times before venturing onto the sandbanks or tidal flats.

Surf & Ocean ConditionsLacanau and the Silver Coast beaches face the open Atlantic. Swell, wind direction, and tide state all affect surfing conditions. Local surf schools provide daily reports and safety guidance.

Climate Summary — Spring (April–May) is mild with blooming vineyards. Summer (June–September) is peak season with long sunny days. Autumn offers harvest festivals and warm colours. Winter is quieter, ideal for cultural visits to Bordeaux.

Hiking & Cycling Maps

The Gironde offers hundreds of kilometres of marked trails through forests, vineyards, and along the coast.

La Vélodyssée — Part of EuroVelo 1, this Atlantic cycling route passes through the Gironde from the Médoc down to the Landes. The Gironde section runs along the coast through Lacanau, Arcachon, and past the Dune du Pilat — a flat, scenic, and well-maintained path suitable for all levels.

GR Trails — The GR 655 (Via Turonensis) crosses the Gironde as part of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. The GR Littoral follows the coastline. Maps and trail guides are available at local tourist offices.

The Roger Lapébie Cycle Path — A 57 km path following an old railway line from Bordeaux to Sauveterre-de-Guyenne, passing through the Entre-Deux-Mers wine country with stops at wineries and medieval villages.
